Eric Thierry Jean Halet of Algebris Investments (UK), LLP

Media Releases

Algebris Investments is a London-based asset manager which manages the Algebris Global Financials Master Fund, which was launched by Davide Serra and Eric Halet on 1 October 2006.

October 2009 – Algebris Investments (UK), LLP, a UK-based asset management company, has acquired 2,037,000 shares, representing a 5.16% stake, in Gruppo MutuiOnline S.p.A., an Italy-based consumer finance company.

August 2009 – Algebris Investments holds over 3 million shares of Webster Financial.

Yvonne Yeoh, formerly an associate partner and portfolio manager at Algebris Investments (UK) L.L.P., left the firm in March 2009.

July 2008 – At this stage we have to admit that, with the subprime crisis and credit crunch, the Anglo-Saxon banking model has hardly covered itself in glory. All the same, its champion in the new struggle was Davide Serra, an Italian who ran a hedge fund in London, which probably sums up the worst nightmare for Italy’s old guard. Mr. Serra is one of two managers of Algebris Investments which controls $2.5 billion, and he decided to try a bit of shareholder activism with an insurance company, Assicurazioni Generali. Founded in 1831, Generali is Italy’s largest insurer, the third largest in Europe, and its headquarters are in Trieste. Rather unusually, it has not one but two chief executives as well as a non-executive chairman, who acts like a hands-on member of the management team.

May 2008 – Assicurazioni Generali SpA activist shareholder Algebris Investments (UK) LLP said it will not mount a legal challenge against the appointment of Eugenio Colucci as chairman of Generali’s internal audit panel.

April 2008 – MILAN Some of the richest and most powerful executives in Europe are scheduled to meet in the Italian city of Trieste this weekend to discuss the fortunes of one of the Continent’s most valuable companies, Assicurazioni Generali. And the tiny British activist fund Algebris Investments wants to spoil the party. Generali, one of the largest European insurers, has invited its investors to the annual meeting in its home city Trieste – once a jewel of the Austro-Hungarian empire and an inspiration to many writers, including James Joyce and Italo Svevo. Algebris last year criticized the insurer’s executives and pressured the company to increase earnings, prompting the chairman of Generali, Antoine Bernheim, to talk of a wider plot against the company. Now, Algebris is back, needling the insurance giant with a rebel list for internal auditors and a promise of more questions at its annual general meeting Saturday.

April 2008 – Activist fund Algebris Investments has asked the Bank of Italy and insurance watchdog ISVAP to intervene in the question of the independence of auditors at Assicurazioni Generali SpA.

April 2008 – Activist investment fund Algebris Investments could be mulling a legal battle to prove that the list of auditors proposed by Edizione Holding SpA for Generali was filed on behalf of major shareholder Mediobanca SpA.

April 2008 – Last week, activist fund Algebris Investments asked Italy’s market watchdog Consob to ascertain whether Edizione Holding has ‘relevant connections’ with Mediobanca, which owns over 15 percent of Generali.

November 2007 – Italian investors subscribed about 10 pct to the capital of Algebris Investments , the activist hedge fund that has criticised Assicurazioni Generali SpA governance and relationship with Mediobanca SpA, according to the daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

November 2007 – Generali is under pressure from one of its investors, the British hedge fund Algebris Investments, to increase earnings, which have trailed those of Axa and Allianz. The Italian insurer, based in Trieste, is seeking acquisitions as the life insurance market in Italy contracts.

October 2007 – Algebris Investments LLP has demanded a reshuffle in the management of Assicurazioni Generali SpA, a move that seeks to maximize the Italian insurer’s market potential. The UK hedge fund also asked for a salary-downgrade and an increase in the bonus package of Assicurazioni’s executive team.

October 2007 – An institutional investor in Assicurazioni Generali SpA has raised fresh concerns about the insurer, adding what it sees as a lack of a strong fund management business to the corporate governance criticism raised by hedge fund Algebris. Algebris, which is backed by UK hedge fund The Children’s Investment Fund, noted in a letter to Generali that both Axa and Allianz have a single CEO structure – and called for a CFO with ‘international experience and strong reputation among institutional investors.’ The hedge fund’s letter, signed by Algebris’ funding partners Davide Serra and Eric Halet as well as partner Massimo Massimilla, also called for the appointment of a non executive president, a group-wide COO and CIO as well as a director general for each geographic area. It also believes Generali chairman Antoine Bernheim is paid too much, and at age 83, questioned his contribution.

October 2007 – UK activist hedge fund Algebris Investments, which is demanding radical changes to insurer Assicurazioni Generali’s corporate governance, has received backing from a leading European corporate governance body. European Corporate Governance Service (ECGS), which partners with Europe’s corporate governance and research groups, today said it supported ‘several of the proposals’ put forward by the hedge fund.

September 2007 – TCI has a minority stake in Algebris and the two funds have offices on adjacent floors of the same Mayfair building.

Eric Halet, formerly a vice president and global industry analyst covering non-U.S. banks, at Wellington Management Company, LLP, left the firm in March 2006

Eric Halet of Algebris Global Investments was a speaker at the 2008 EuroHedge Summit.

The Children’s Investment Fund Management is backing London-based Algebris Investments, a new hedge fund firm formed by Eric Halet of Wellington

July 1999 – The price of shares in three French banks involved in a massive and bitter takeover battle rose sharply again after the banks had rejected pressure from the authorities to compromise in the national interest. The decision by the BNP, Societe Generale (SG) and Paribas banks was seen as marking a return to the takeover ring after an imposed pause, and as a notable setback for the authorities. A banking analyst with Deutsche Bank in London, Eric Halet, commented: “The situation will now be decided by the market, and from the point of view of investors this is a good thing because interference by the Bank of France would have meant some form of sweetening of the deal to the detriment of shareholders. “But from the point of view of the Bank of France it is a bad thing because it now looks like it no longer has the power to intervene and control things.”
